It will get the contents from tar, zip, deb, rpm, and ...

It will get the content from tar, zip, deb, rpm, and cpio archives, as well as compressed files.
It helps keep the filesystem sane by putting every archive's contents into a dedicated directory, and making sure the owner can read and write whatever's extracted.
It can even recursively extract archives.
Most important functions of dtrx by Brett Smith:
• Handles many archive types: You only need to remember one simple command to extract tar, zip, cpio, deb, rpm, gem, 7z, cab, rar, gz, bz2, lzma, xz, and many kinds of exe files, including Microsoft Cabinet archives, InstallShield archives, and self-extracting zip files. If they have any extra compression, like tar. bz2 files, dtrx 6.6 will take care of that for you, too.
• Keeps everything organized: dtrx [dtrx6.6.exe] will make sure that archives are extracted into their own dedicated directories.
• Sane permissions: dtrx - 0MB makes sure you can read and write all the files you just extracted, while leaving the rest of the permissions intact.
• Recursive extraction: dtrx 6.6 can find archives inside the archive and extract those too.
• Python 2. 4 or higher
News in the current dtrx version:
• dtrx can now handle `xz compression`_.
• the tests now use the PyYAML library, instead of the abandoned Syck.
